One of the best ways to grow your blog is by posting consistently. The easiest way to do that is to ensure you have an editorial calendar. Today I wanted to talk about how I generate a year’s worth of blog posts in one day and the strategies I use to generate blog post ideas.
The first step in generating blog post ideas is to separate your blog into categories. I write mostly about entrepreneurship and blogging, so those are two separate categories. You can even assign different posting days to different categories, but I don’t really do that. I write about what I wanted for that moment.
Utilize Social Media
Once you’ve developed your categories, browse social media. My favorite tool is Pinterest because it’s all blog posts. You can also browse Reddit, Stumbleupon, Bloglovin, Twitter, and Facebook. This should go without saying, but don’t just straight up steal people’s posts. I don’t actually read any posts during this brainstorming exercise, I just look at titles and allow them to inspire me to write my own version of the posts.
Ask Yourself Some Questions
Sit down and ask yourself some questions that you wondered about your niche before you started learning about it. For example, before I started blogging, I always wondered what was meant by the term “SEO” and “keyword research”. I could ask myself, how do you ensure good SEO? How do you do keyword research? Those can generate blog post titles.
Read Magazines or Blogs & Use Word Swapping
Even when I’m not generating blog post ideas, I always like to read magazines and other blogs. But when I’m reading magazines for idea generation purposes, I love to utilize word swapping. For example, let’s say I was reading the magazine Airbnbmag. There was an article titled “Everything You Need to Know About Buying Plane Tickets” in last month’s magazine. For this blog, it might inspire me to write a post called “Everything You Need to Know about Buying a Domain Name” or “Everything You Need to Know About Buying a Hosting Package”. For my design blog, I might title a post “Everything You Need to Know about Buying Design Software”. Utilizing word swapping is my favorite way to generate ideas because there’s absolutely zero idea stealing involved since the article title should be unrelated to your niche.
Listen to Your Audience
Are there any questions you’ve heard multiple times from your audience? Or maybe even just one person asked you a question and it inspired a blog post idea. If your audience is already asking, you can be sure it will be a good blog post. I love using my Facebook group for this since they are people who already read my blog or know who I am.
Utilize a Topic Generator
If I’m just completely stuck and couldn’t generate blog post ideas with the other methods, I will use a topic generator. I tend to stay away from these for the most part, but I have used them on occasion.
First, there’s the Hubspot topic generator. I went in and used the keywords ‘blogging’ and ‘entrepreneurship’. It gave me back the following ideas: Blogging expectations vs reality, Will entrepreneurship ever rule the world, the next big thing in blogging and this week’s top stories about blogging. Obviously, it just pulled a bunch of random titles and inserted my topics into the title. Probably the only one I’d use is blogging expectations vs reality. It definitely gave me some ideas to spin off of, though.
Second, there’s the Portent content idea generator. Using the same keywords, it brought back the following: save your marriage using only blogging, Why entrepreneurship never works out the way you plan, how to stay popular in the blogging world and how ‘influencer’ created the blogging world. This one seems to work better for lifestyle niches, but you could generate a ton and let it inspire you. Use topic generators with a grain of salt and let them inspire you rather than give you an exact title.
